About

The Aotearoa Surf Film Festival (ASFF) is New Zealand’s premier surf film event, celebrating the intersection of surf culture, cinema, and environmental consciousness. Launched in 2013, the festival has grown into a nationwide touring event, showcasing a curated selection of international and Kiwi surf feature films, documentaries, and short films. ASFF hosts 26 shows across 12 weeks, reaching 5000+ people in every major surf region of the country.

Origins and Growth:
The ASFF was founded by filmmaker Nick Stevenson to provide a platform for local surf storytelling. In its early years, the festival featured around 10 shows, primarily showcasing international films due to a scarcity of local content. Louis Murphy-Harris has since taken over the reigns of the festival, continuing its mission and expanding its reach. Over time, as New Zealand's surf film scene flourished, the festival expanded to 26 shows, with a significant increase in Kiwi-produced films.

Festival Highlights:
Touring Format: ASFF travels across New Zealand, bringing surf cinema to various coastal communities. Events are held in diverse venues, from traditional cinemas, community halls to outdoor beach settings.

Film Selection:

The festival features a mix of international and local films, with a focus on storytelling, cinematography, and environmental themes. A panel of judges, including notable figures like Craig Levers and Gav Bisman who have been supporting the festival from day one. Film submissions are judged based on criteria such as cinematography, story quality, surfing content, innovation, environmental message, cultural diversity, and soundtrack.

Awards:

ASFF recognizes outstanding films with various awards. For instance, in 2024, Chris Clark's "Wai Is The Yang" won the Best Kiwi Film award, highlighting the film's exploration of surfing's impact on mental health.

Community and Culture:
The ASFF is more than just a film festival; it's a celebration of surf culture and community. The festival fosters connections among surfers, filmmakers, and environmental advocates, promoting a shared appreciation for the ocean and storytelling. Events often include live music, food trucks, and opportunities for audience engagement, creating a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere.
